Learning, Earning and Figuring It Out

The year was 2020 (don’t worry I’m not going to mention the C word) and the markets were the lowest they have been since 2017. I didn’t particularly pay attention to the markets at the time; I just knew the economy was taking a hit. If I knew then what I know now I would have dumped every penny into the market. At that time every penny probably equaled around $3k-$5k. I was 23 at the time and had a $40,000 salary so $3k-$5k saved up was the most I had in my life. It was around this time that a coworker was showing me the investments that he was making on the platform ‘Robinhood’. He was investing into stocks that were taking the biggest hit such as hotels, airfare, travel agencies, etc. I always knew investing was important, but I didn’t dive into why it was important. I thought what my coworker was doing was a huge gamble and that he may never see that money again. However, it was very intriguing to watch his decision making. I thought about it for a while and remember asking him “You think I should start investing?” of course he followed with “Absolutely.” It was the default to contribute 10% to the company’s 401k plan which I was already doing but this was my first experience of my own personal investment decisions. I deposited $1,000 into my Robinhood account which started my journey as an investor.

My goal for this blog is to be 100% transparent. No AI slop, no “buy my course”, no BS expert talking over your head. Just me being honest about where I am financially so that readers can see what it’s like to start from the bottom. With that being said, I am nowhere near a professional so you should take my path to freedom with a grain of salt.

My investing style is aligned with the long-term in mind. I don’t believe in the short path to freedom. It takes time, consistency and a lot of boring, non-sexy habits. I stay away from anything that looks too good to be true and focus on the plan. I will show every decision I make with money and why I made them, sharing mistakes and successes along the way.

So stick around to see the Freedom in Progress blueprint!
